Wall St erases FTSE gains

The FTSE 100 Index closed barely changed today, up just 3 points to 5,861 points, after a poor start on Wall Street erased early gains.

Scottish & Southern Energy was the worst performer, down 2.2% to 1,154p. The banking sector also featured heavily among the fallers. Lloyds TSB fell 1.48% to 533p, Royal Bank of Scotland dropped 1.32% to 1,721p and HBOS declined 1.24% to 953.50p. The miners dominated the risers with BHP Billiton up 2.15% to 1,094p, Antofagasta up 2.95% to 445.50p, Lonmin up 4.53% to 2,905p and Vedanta 2.92% higher at 1,410p. In the US, the Dow Jones industrial average is down 16.49 points, or 0.15%, at 11,118.28 points after European antitrust regulators fined Microsoft. European Union regulator...
