MPs demand Equitable Life apology

A cross-party group of MPs have called on the Chancellor to end the Equitable Life Saga by apologising to policyholders.

Liberal Democrat MP Jo Swinson, who organised a joint letter to Alistair Darling, says she is disappointed at the Government's silence following a report from the Parliamentary Ombudsman. Many Equitable Life policyholders have died while the Government has delayed action, and Swinson says no more should be denied their right to justice. A four-year investigation by the Parliamentary Ombudsman, Ann Abrahams, was concluded in July, and recommended the Government should formally apologise to policyholders and establish a compensation fund for those who lost their savings.
