The FTSE 100 Index gained 44.50 points, or 0.7%, to 6,035 points today, led by Marks & Spencer on hopes of better trading.
M&S jumped 20.50p, or 3.72%, to 571.50p. Tesco surged 3.36% to 346p on a report this morning it is considering placing its £12bn freehold property portfolio into a Real Estate Investment Trust (Reit). Compass was also strong as investors welcomed the appointment of Richard Cousins as its new chief executive. The shares rose 1.49% to 238.75p. Miners extended yesterdays gains with Anglo American up 3.56% at 2,152p, BHP Billiton 3.08% higher at 1,021.50p and Xstrata up 2.24% to 1,872p.
