Lautro 12 surrender could lead to cagey industry - FSA

The FSA fears firms will grow reluctant to discuss claims informally if it does not stand its ground in the Lautro 12 name-and-shame row.

It yesterday appealed to the Information Tribunal to overturn a decision to make public the names of the dozen mortgage providers found guilty of mis-selling endowments between 1988 and 1994. The issue had been the subject of a Freedom of Information (FoI) claim and last month the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) told the FSA to name the parties involved. But the regulator has appealed saying failure to do so could hamper the way it conducts informal discussions with firms in the future and lead to a cagier industry.
