FTSE wavers over sub-prime worries

In London, markets settled at a similar level to opening after early gains were wiped out over concerns of sub-prime exposure, and the FTSE 100 fell 5.4 points (0.09%) to 5,874.7.

Diageo shares climbed after the firm reported a 5% rise in half-year pre-tax profits, up 43 points (4.16%) to £10.77, while Vedanta Resources added 70 points (3.58%) to £20.24. HBOS shares fell following profit losses at Bradford & Bingley, down 36 points (5.41%) to 629p, while Schroders dropped 40 points (3.97%) to 967p. On Wall Street, markets saw a turbulent start to trading after the US Government announced a raft of measures to stimulate economic growth, and the Dow Jones was down 71.04 points (0.57%) to 12,481.2.
