FTSE solid despite global sell-off

The FTSE 100 is remarkably steady this morning despite a overnight global sell-off, currently 9.90 points lower (0.17%) to 5858.10.

Anglo-Australian mining giant BHP Billiton is leading the losses after announcing it has raised its bid for rival Rio Tinto. BHP is 5.51% lower to 1509. A Citigroup downgrade has hit advanced materials supplier Johnson Matthey, down 3.56% to 1870; while Antofagasta is following its mining compatriot lower, dipping 2.66% to 657.50 so far. Reckitt Benckiser, one of the world's leading cleaning product manufacturers, has jumped in early trading – 2.89% higher to 2603.
