FTSE only slightly dimmed by A&L woes

Alliance & Leicester remained at the top of the FTSE loser's table at the close of play on Tuesday, shipping 51.75p, or 10.14%, to close on 458.75.

But the index only marginally suffered, dropping 8.7 points, or 0.14%, to close on 6,211.9. Rio Tinto, up 236p, or 3.68%, to £66.45 was the day’s biggest winner, followed by Vedanta Resources, Eurasian and Imperial Tobacco. In the US, the Dow Jones has taken a bit of a hit in early trading, dropping 56.67 points, or 0.44%, to 12,819.64, Hewlett Packard contributing the most to the slump. IFAonline
