Banking shares drag FTSE down

In London, a fall in banking shares pulled the markets down and the FTSE 100 closed down 72.5 points, or 1.13%, to 6,359.6.

Tate & Lyle made the biggest gains, up 12 points, or 2.84%, to 434p, while Britiah American Tobacco jumped 43 points, or 2.45%, to £18.01. Scottish & Newcastle gained 16.5 points, or 2.23%, to 757p, Cable and Wireless added 3.6 points, or 1.99%, to 184.4p, while Imperial Tobacco climbed 46 points, or 1.93%, to £24.30. Experian shares dropped 45.25 points, or 9.53%, to 429.5p, Whitbread shares lost 71 points, or 4.42%, to £15.34 and British Land Co fell 38.5 points, or 4.05%, to 912p.
