A&L leads FTSE losses after raising mortgage rates

The FTSE fell 6.6 points, or 0.11%, to 5977.3 as Alliance & Leicester led losses on news it has raised mortgage rates for the second time this week.

The bank dropped 27.5 points, or 5.23%, to 498.5 while inter-dealer broker ICAP fell 27.5 points, or 4.44% to 592.5. Eurasian Natural Resources rose 83 points, or 7.5%, to 1189 while British Energy Group fell 38 points, or 5.42%, to 739.5 following reports German energy group RWE could bid almost £11bn for the provider. The Dow Jones rose 96.08 points, or 0.77%, to 12623.34. Home Depot rose 1.09 points, or 3.94%, to 28.76 while General Motors rose 0.73 points, or 3.63%, to 20.86. Meanwhile, Alcoa fell 1.07 points, or 2.9%, to 35.77 while Exxon Mobil fell 0.41 points, or 0.46%, to 89...
