Rock nationalisation reports raise FTSE

The FTSE rose 0.44%, or 27.9 points, this afternoon to 6392.1p as continuing reports the Government might nationalise Northern Rock lifted the troubled bank's stocks.

Northern Rock rose 7.79%, or 6.7 points, to 92.7p while Rentokil Initial rose 3.85%, or 4.4 points, to 118.7p. Antofragasta fell 3.41%, or 25 points, to 709p, while Lonmin dropped 1.9%, or 59 points, to 3043p after Goldman Sachs downgraded the mining sector. In the US, the Dow Jones was slightly weaker, down 54.06 or 0.40% at 13463.90, on the back of inflation worries. Citigroup was among the worst hit stocks, following news it will take $49bn in affiliated funds onto its balance sheet, while Microsoft and Boeing led the top performers’ list.
