Norwich Union payouts on critical illness policies increased to over £80m in 2005, almost a quarter higher than in 2004.
In 2005 Norwich Union paid 1,123 critical illness (CI) claims with an average payout of £73,000. It declined 12% of claims because of non-disclosure of medical facts at policy outset and 11% because policy conditions were not met. The top five causes for claims in 2005 were: Cancer 68%; Heart attack 8%; Multiple sclerosis 7%; Stroke 6%; and Heart surgery 3% Almost nine times more men claimed for a heart attack than women, but twice as many women claimed for multiple sclerosis.
