A row has broken out over comments attributed to the head of IT at the newly combined Inland Revenue and Customs & Excise, which suggest about a third of Revenue letters are returned because of incorrect address details.

The Guardian reports Steve Lamey, chief information officer, apparently made the comments at a meeting of government heads of IT. Lamey has subsequently denied the figures, as reported in trade publication Computer Weekly, saying the figures were unofficial estimates based on a small sample size. Instead, the official line is that 95% of addresses will be correct by April for the estimated 160 million letters to be mailed annually by the newly combined department.
