Northern Rock leads volatile FTSE

Northern Rock again leads the FTSE although a volatile opening has led to little change, the index climbing 3.7 points, or 0.06%, to 6538.9.

The bank has jumped 13.3p, or 8.76%, to 165.1p. It is followed by the Royal Bank of Scotland, which has climbed 18 points, or 3.25%, to 572p. Punch Taverns concludes the top three after climbing 27 points, or 2.58%, to £10.73. However, the FTSE has also suffered notable losses in early trading. Electronic interdealer broker firm ICAP has slipped 15p, or 2.81%, to 518p. It is followed by Anglo American, down 80p, or 2.43%, to £32.17, and BHP Billiton, down 41p, or 2.35%, to £17.06.
