THE PENSIONS Bill has been dealt another hefty blow after a large number of Labour MPs attacked it for refusing to pay compensation to workers who have already lost their pension savings when their companies collapsed.
The Scotsman reports that more than 160 Labour MPs have already signed a motion suggesting they might defeat the Bill when it faces its final vote in the Commons. In total, more than 250 MPs have signed the Common motion calling for those workers to be compensated - a higher number than signed the motion opposing top-up fees, the paper notes. The strong support has made the rebellions to believe the government might be defeated at the report stage unless a compromise can be found.
