Northern Rock continues FTSE plummet

The FTSE fell 31 points, or 0.48%, this afternoon to 6429p.

Northern Rock fell 71.8 points, or 27.94%, to 185.2p after the Government said it will not give a safety net to customers opening accounts from today. Alliance & Leicester fell 60 points, or 7.36%, to 755.5p. Kingfisher fell 11.3 points, or 5.88%, to 181p. Home Retail fell 21.25 points, or 5.38%, to 373.75p. Persimmon fell 50 points, or 5.06%, to 939p. Carnival rose 157 points, or 7.08%, to 2374p. Friends Provident rose 7.1 points, or 4.24%, to 174.7p. Sainsbury rose 15.5 points, or 2.8%, to 569.5p. Kazakhmys rose 27 points, or 1.9%, to 1450p. Anglo American rose 53 points, or 1....
