Miners dig deep to keep FTSE steady

The FTSE 100 index has ended the day slightly higher with a rise of 9.2 points or 0.15% to 6,227.6, as miners kept the index moving higher.

Rio Tinto posted the biggest gains with a rise of 3.3% to £26.60, closely followed by Vedanta Resources which gained 2.93% to £11.25, while BHP Billiton climbed 2.4% to 939p. Smith & Nephew also climbed 2.44% to 566.75p, while Cable & Wireless added 2.05% to 161.75p, although gains were limited by Enterprise Inns which fell 1.38% to 644.5p, while Slough Estates slipped 1.55% to 760p. However, Tate & Lyle continued to be the biggest drag on the index with a fall of 15.56% to 608p, after a surprise profit warning this morning, while SABMiller dropped 2.32% to £11.78, while Drax declined 1...
