FTSE falls as Wall Street disappoints

The FTSE 100 Index fell 7.70 points, or 0.1%, to close at 5,992 points today as the expected good start on Wall Street failed to materialise and insurers eased up on earlier gains.

Prudential was still the top riser, gaining 10.64% to 743.50p, after it confirmed it has received a £17bn merger proposal from Aviva, but has rejected it saying it is confident in its future as an independent company. Friends Provident and Legal & General both moved higher in sympathy, gaining 2.22% to 218.25p and 0.87% to 144.75p respectively. Miners were also strong, sending Anglo American 1.38% higher to 2,057p and Antofagasta up 1.43% to 2,057p.
