A simple solution to allow Group Personal Pensions to gain exemption from personal accounts without breaching the EU Distance Marketing Directive already exists in the industry, claims Aegon.
In his recent speech to the ABI conference James Purnell, Minister for Pensions Reform, called for the government and industry to work together to find a solution as while it believes auto-enrolment is the best way of overcoming inertia, it doesn’t “want to undermine the success of GPPs”. As a result, over the last week there it has been suggested that Purnell is asking the industry to convert contract-based pension schemes, such as GPPs, into trust-based schemes as a way to get round the DMD.
