The FTSE 100 Index gained 32.70 points to 4,847, its highest level in two years, paced by Shire Pharmaceuticals.
The drugs maker also reached a two-year high, closing 30p or 5.5% up to 577p, after agreeing to develop a drug for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance also ended a good day, ending 3p higher to 80.50p, along with betting firm William Hill, up 19p to 583p. Xstrata, an exporter of coal led the drop, losing as much as 44.50p or 4.7% to 887.50p, after nickel producer WMC Resources, said its shares were worth as much as 30% more than Xstrata's A$7.4bn hostile offer, based on an audit commissioned by the company.
