Old Mutual dictates FTSE stumble

The FTSE 100 recovered from an early slip to end the week 6.7 points lower to 4886.5 points, led by Old Mutual and a host of mining stocks.

The insurance firm has shed 6.5p or 5% to 122.75p today after it reported the company is in talks to purchase Sweden firm Skandia AB in an effort to extend its range away from South Africa. Analysts are concerned the South African-based company could pay too much. Steel firm Corus has also shed 2p to 40.5p, after ThyssenKrupp, Europe's fourth-largest steelmaker posted results that failed to meet analysts estimates. Additionally, copper mining firm Antogagasta lost 33p to £10.52, as Copper futures fell to a three-month low in London, while BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto dropped 19p to 625p...
