Shares in Northern Rock climbed in early trading today, spurred on by a pledge from Alistair Darling that the Government would release a statement concerning the troubled bank "later this week".
The FTSE 100 index, however, is marginally down, dropping 24.8 points, or 0.37%, to 6590.6. Northern Rock shares climbed 24p, or 11.61%, today, to 230.75p. It was followed by Schroders, which has climbed 27 points, or 1.9%, to £14.46, and British Airways, up 7.5p to 427.25p. However, overshadowing these gains in early trading are losses for Experian, which has dropped 34.5p, or 6.35%, to 508.5p, Rexam, down 15p to 531.5p, and HBOS, which has fallen 19.5p, or 2.04%, to 936p.
