Employer confidence in DB schemes falls

Almost 5,000 businesses have lost confidence in their final salary pension schemes over the last year.

Research from Prudential shows out of more than 37,000 companies with 50 or more employees, only 10% feel positive about the defined benefit schemes (DB) they offer, while more than 13% say they have lost confidence in the scheme over the last 12 months. Prudential says the combined deficit of final salary pension schemes in the UK is more than £100bn, which is causing many companies to close their schemes, with 57% of schemes now closed to new members, compared to just 10% in 1997.
