FTSE slides on oil

The FTSE 100 Index has fallen 51.5 points, or 0.9%, to 5627.2 points this morning after oil prices fell in New York.

Anglo American has lost 3.3% to 2,012p and Rio Tinto has dropped 2.7% to 2,783p. Cairn Energy, which explores for oil and gas in Asia, has tumbled 0.64% to 2,173p. Crude oil fell in New York on speculation a government report today will show US gasoline inventories rose for a fourth week as refiners increased output to meet peak summer demand. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 Stock Average added 308.0 points, or 2%, to 15,907.2 points as exporters including paced gains on speculation a weaker yen will boost the value of their overseas sales.
