The introduction of compulsory pension schemes is the only solution to help young people with low wages to save for retirement, claims a TUC report released today.
“Pay, poverty and pensions – problems for young people” reveals there are 1.7m 16 to 25 year olds working in industries that do not have proper provision for retirement. Only one in ten hotel and restaurant workers and just a third of retail and distribution workers has access to a workplace pension. The industries that traditionally offer workplace schemes, such as the energy and water sector, have around 90% of employees in pension schemes, but employ less than 1% of under 25 year olds.
