Oil boosts FTSE

The FTSE 100 Index has added 21.9 points, or 0.4%, to 6105.3 points this morning as oil prices rise for a third day.

BP has risen 7.5p, or 1.1%, to 682p, while Shell has added 13p, or 0.7%, to 1,851p. Oil for June delivery rose as much as 1% to $72.86 a barrel in after-hours electronic trading in New York. Xstrata has advanced 72p, or 3%, to 2,470p on news it will join the MSCI World Index after the close of trading on 31 May. Royal & Sun Alliance has risen 3.25p, or 2.3%, to 143.50p after it said operating profit, including forecast investment returns, rose 29% to £207m in the first quarter, driven by improved underwriting at its international unit.
