FTSE down as markets continue rollercoaster ride

In London, an initial rally failed to halt the market turbulence of the past few days and the FTSE 100 was down 73.3 points (1.28%) by mid-morning to 5666.8.

Prudential made the biggest gains in early trading, up 22.5 points (3.64%) to 641p, following reports that Ping An Insurance may buy a stake in the firm. First Group added 15.5 points (2.46%) to 645.5p. Share in ITV made the biggest falls, down 3.2 points (4.34%) to 70.5p, while Antofagasta continued the decline of mining stocks, losing 26 points (4.32%) to 575.5p.
