FTSE drops 100 points in four hours

The FTSE suffered a mini-collpase in early trading on Wednesday, dropping around 100 points by mid-day, as investors reacted to a late sell-off on Wall Street.

By 11.55am, the index had slipped 100.4 points, or 1.66%, to 5,957.3. The morning's biggest losers so far include Eurasian, which has slipped 75p to £12.92, and Vodafone, which has dropped 7.65p, or 4.7%, to 155.1p The National Grid, Cairn Energy and Vedanta Resources are also suffering. However, losses are being soothed by significant gains for Alliance & Leicester, up 16.75p, or 4.18%, to 417p, British Airways, up 7.25p to 238p, Smith & Nephew, Standard Life and Smiths Group.
