British Energy surge helps FTSE

British Energy Group tops the FTSE winners table in early trading, helping to push the index up 21.9p, or 0.37%, to 5,902.

British Energy has climbed 22p, or 4.13%, to 555p, followed by Standard Life which has climbed 6.75p to 214p. However, gains have been stemmed by losses for HBOS, down 27p, or 4.06%, to 638p. Royal Bank of Scotland, down 9.5p, or 2.57%, to 359.75, has also dropped share value, as has British Land, down 21.5p to 986.5p. In the US, the Dow Jones climbed 178.83, or 1.45%, to 12,552.24, helped by a 6% gain for Alcoa. American Express also had a successful day, climbing 1.77 points to 46.85, as did AT&T, which climbed 1.16 points, or 3.09%, to 38.67. American International Group suffered...
