Energy bills are set to explode over the next month after British Gas warned its more than 12 million customers to expect gas bills to go up by nearly 13% next month, The Daily Telegraph reports.

The company blames a fast rising wholesale price of gas, sparked by the loss of cheap gas from depleted North Sea fields and increasing competition from other countries’ domestic gas markets. The Daily Telegraph says the latest rises mean customers will have seen bills rise by about 20% over the past year. Together with increases in electricity prices – driven by the fact some 40% of UK electricity is now gas fuelled – the average annual total bill for a family of four will go up by about £100, The Telegraph quotes analysts.
