Financials keep FTSE afloat

It was a tale of two sectors in London today, with financials keeping the FTSE 100 ahead of retreating miners.

The index closed the Monday session 33 points up, or 0.52%, to 6337.90. Royal Bank of Scotland took advantage of investors splurging on the sector, leading the gains to close on 439.75, a 37 point gain, or 9.19%. Barclays finally got some positive press over the weekend and its share price rocketed in trading, up 38.50 points, or 8.11%, to 513. A rescue plan for Northern Rock from former Abbey boss Luqman Arnold led the beleaguered lender into positive territory, closing the session up 6.48% to 154.40; while Standard Life jumped 6.46% to 259.50, on news it has conceded defeat to Pearl...
