Poor resources responsible for gold-plating - papers 21st July

GOVERNMENT TEAMS responsible for applying European Union laws are often under-engaged, poorly resourced and prone to making mistakes, companies have told a Treasury-commissioned survey.

According to The Financial Times, in a consultation published by Lord Davidson, many businesses said over-implementation of laws from Brussels put Britain at a competitive disadvantage to its fellow EU members in some areas. The Davidson review is due to make recommendations by the end of the year on reforming laws which are “gold-plated” beyond minimum EU requirements, duplicate rules from Brussels or add to regulatory burdens through guidance or other non-statutory means.
