Oil spurt pushes FTSE ahead

The FTSE 100 index has made a good start this morning rising 36.1 points or 0.7% to 5218.2 thanks to gains by Anglo American and BP.

Anglo American has climbed 4.6% to £16.35 after the company said it will cut its stake in AngloGold Ashanti, South Africa's largest gold producer, and return $1bn to investors. Meanwhile, BP, Europe's largest oil company, is leading gains among energy companies after crude oil had its biggest rise in a month yesterday rising 3.5% to $62.44 a barrel lifting BP up 2.3% so far this morning to 623p while Royal Dutch Shell, the world's third-biggest oil producer, has added 2% to £16.94. Elsewhere, the London Stock Exchange is currently down 7p or 1.3% to 555p after Euronext NV said it may ...
