In London, shares failed to recover much ground after a sharp fall in early trading, and the FTSE 100 closed down 68.6 points, or 1.05%, to 6,459.3.
Vodafone shares made the biggest gains, up 4.7 points, or 2.69%, to 179.7p, followed by Home Retail, which gained 6.75 points, or 1.81%, to 380p. Morrison climbed 4.75 points, or 1.62%, to 297.25p, Carnival shares added 36 points, or 1.61%, to £22.68, Pearson jumped 11 points, or 1.44%, to 776p. British Energy Group shares fell 47 points, or 8.12%, to 532p, Tullow Oil lost 36 points, or 5.79%, to 585.5p, while Kazakhyms dropped 79 points, or 5.15%, to £14.55.
