A&L chairman Sir Derek Higgs dies suddenly

Alliance & Leicester chairman Sir Derek Higgs has died suddenly at the age of 64.

Appointed A&L chairman in October 2005, Sir Higgs was taken ill unexpectedly and died in a London hospital yesterday afternoon. Deputy chairman Roy Brown will act as chairman until a permanent successor is found. “It was with shock and sadness that we learned of Derek’s sudden and unexpected death and our thoughts are with his family,” Brown says. “Derek made an outstanding contribution to British business and was a well-known figure in the City; he was a pleasure to work with.” A&L group chief executive David Bennett will return to work next week after recovering from illness.
