Failed ICI takeover bolsters FTSE

The FTSE 100 has continued where it left off last week, when it made exceptional gains, and is up 17.9 points, or 0.27%, to 6750.3 in early trading.

ICI shares jumped by 16.67% in early trading after news that the company had snubbed a £7.2bn takeover offer from Akzo Nobel; ICI shares gained 91.5 points to 640.5p. Johnson Matthey saw gains of 49 points, or 2.79%, to £18.06, while BHP Bilton followed close behind with a gain of 31 points, or 2.28%, to £13.89. Early gains were also made by Rolls-Royce with shares up 9.75 points, or 1.78%, to 556.5p, and SABMiller, which climbed 22 points, or 1.74%, to £12.83.
