Scottish power gives FTSE energy to rise

The FTSE 100 has made a good start after Friday's drop, with a small gain of 4.8 points, or 0.09%, to 5428.4.

Scottish Power is leading the advance after reports of a possible takeover. The country’s fifth largest energy provider, has climbed 21p, or 3.75% to 581p, on reports E.ON, Germany's largest utility, has begun talks to buy Scottish Power for as much as £12bn. Scottish & Southern Energy, another UK utility, is also up 1.5% to 998p. Elsewhere Insurance companies are doing well with Royal and Sun Alliance moving up 2.5p, or 2.38%, to 107.5p, closely followed by Legal and General with gains of 2.25p, or 2.03%, to 113p. Friends Provident is also one of the big movers, advancing 3.25p, or 1...
