FTSE drops as rate cut hopes fade

In London, markets suffered a further setback as investors feared the Fed's rate cuts will not be enough to stave of a recession across the Atlantic and the FTSE 100 closed down 97.6 points (1.7%) to 5,642.5.

Anglo American shares made the biggest gains, up 134 points (5.39%) to £26.18, while Alliance & Leicester added 34 points (4.77%) to 747.5p. Severn Trent shares dived 185 points (12.96%) to £12.43, while AMEC dropped 39 points (5.76%) to 638p as financial firms continued to suffer from the effects of the credit crunch. On Wall Street, markets plummeted in early trading before making a slight recovery as recession fears persisted and the Dow Jones was down 73.89 (0.62%) to 11,897.3.
