The FTSE rose 98.7 points, or 1.71%, to 5886.3p following reports Barclays and Lloyds TSB will increase their dividend payouts this week.
Barclays rose 21.25 points, or 4.97%, to 448.75p while Lloyds TSB rose 16 points, or 4.04%, to 411.75p. Alliance & Leicester led the losers with a loss of 10.5 points, or 2%, to 514.5p. Marks & Spencer fell 2.75 points, or 0.69%, to 394.5p. The Dow Jones fell 28.77 points, or 0.23%, to 12348.21c as Honeywell International fell 1.47 points, or 2.56%, to 56.04c. Intel Corporation fell 0.35 points, or 1.71%, to 19.94c. JPMorgan Chase rose 0.64 points, or 1.5%, to 43.25c while Hewlett Packard rose 0.61 points, or 1.5%, to 43.25c.
