Miners power FTSE upwards at week end

The FTSE had a strong start to the day up 56.10 (0.91%) to 6211.40 driven by consolidation talks in the mining sector.

Vedanta Resources made the highest gains up 120.00(6.32%) to 2020.00 as speculation mounted of a possible Chinese bid. Other strong performances came from Astra Zeneca up 110.00(4.93%) and Anglo American which rose 132.00(4.70%) to 2941.00. At the bottom of the table there was a poor showing for Royal Dutch Shell which fell 29.00(1.43%). Northern Rock dropped 6.50(7.73%) as bids for the beleaguered bank still fail to meet its price target. There was no activity on Wall Street or in Japan due to public holidays IFAonline
