FTSE backs away from 6-year highs

The FTSE 100 index is down 10.4 points, or 0.16%, to 6,410.8 in early trading, as the index has fallen back from yesterday's six-year highs.

In a reverse of yesterday, Wolseley is the biggest loser with a fall of 2.35% to £13.74, as it moved away from rumours of private equity interest, while property companies are also lower, with Liberty International falling 1.29% to £13.01. Banks are also off to a poor start as HBOS has slipped 0.95% to £11.42, closely followed by Standard Chartered which is down 0.91% to £15.27, while mining giant Antofagasta has dropped 0.92% to 484.5p. Reed Elsevier is posting the biggest gains with a rise of 5.87% to 640p, while Diageo has gained 2.99% to £10.52, as both companies produced upbeat fin...
