Miners strike losses for FTSE

The mining sector drilled a hole in the FTSE 100 this afternoon, with the index plummeting 92 points, or 1.38%, to 6567.1.

Anglo American was the worst blue chip performer - closing at 3100, a fall of 124 points, or 3.85%. Compatriot Lonmin had the same fate; it lost 138 points, or 3.6%, to 3695. A combination of defensive buying and a price target upgrade led Kelda to the day’s best result, the UK and US water and waste water services provider closed up 18.5, or 2.13%, to 889. Severn Trent advanced on a broker tip, climbing 27 points, or 2.01%, to 1370. The Dow Jones is weaker in early trading, down 79.26 points, or 0.57%, to 13892.29.
