FTSE ends the day hovering at 6,000

The FTSE 100 index has ended the session down 160.5 points, or 2.61%, to 6,000.7, as financials dragged the index lower.

HBOS was the biggest loser with a fall of 5.75% to £10.17, as the sub-prime fears in the US hit the mortgage provider hard, while insurers are also suffering with Legal & General down 4.88% to 146.25p, while Old Mutual slipped 4.64% to 159.25p. 3i Group also fell 5.41% to £10.76, while miner Anglo-American declined 5.16% to £23.54 on fears the money buoying up the market is drying up, although there was some good news as retail stocks moved higher. Just four stocks ended the day higher, with DSG International up 1.81% to 169p, closely followed by Sainsburys which added 1.73% to 530p, wh...
