FTSE ends higher despite Wall Street wobble

The FTSE 100 index has closed up just 5.8 points or 0.09% to 6,210.3, as fears over the US economy wiped out earlier gains.

Financials were among the heaviest losers with Amvescap ending the session as the biggest drag on the index with a fall of 1.85% to 610.5p, closely followed by Bradford & Bingley which slipped 1.17% to 463.5p. Scottish & Newcastle dropped 1.62% to 546p, while British Land slipped 1.27% to £15.50, and Kelda Group fell 1.14% to 912.5p, although losses were limited by Persimmon which gained 2.07% to £14.29. However, Enterprise Inns posted the biggest gains with a rise of 4.28% to 658p, closely followed by Alliance Boots which climbed 2.91% to 796.5p, while Intercontinental Hotels added 2.87...
