FTSE dips below 6,000 again

In London, markets fell in early trading, mirroring other European markets, and the FTSE 100 dropped 52.4 points (0.87%) to 5,962.4.

Unilever made the biggest gains, up 26 points (1.53%) to £17.23, while National Grid added 6p (0.83%) to 733p. Home Retail was among a number of major losers, down 11.5 points (4.22%) to 261.25p, while Persimmon dropped 29.5 points (4.18%) to 676.5p. Banking shares also fared badly and Barclays shares lost 16p (3.29%) to 470p. On Wall Street, markets ended the day in much the same state they started despite losses in the mining sector and the Dow Jones was up 3.01 points (0.02%) to 12,612.43. General Motors added 0.43 (2.09%) to $21.01 ahead of reporting season, while Merck climbed 0.78...
