FTSE hangs on to WPP gains

The FTSE 100 index closed 24.5 points, or 0.42%, higher at 5,860.5 points today after strong results from WPP and Lloyds TSB.

WPP was the top FTSE gainer, rising 7.9% to 668p after its full-year profit climbed well ahead of expectations on strong growth abroad. Market watchers said investors were particularly pleased by the contribution of WPP's US acquisition Grey Global. Services firm Capita also lent support to the index with a 3.7% rise to 471.75p, benefiting from analyst upgrades in the wake of strong figures on Thursday. Banks accounted for 17 points of the FTSE 100's rise as Lloyds TSB bounced 4.7% to 566.50p after posting an unexpected rise in underlying 2005 profit. Other banks were encouraged by th...
