The FTSE 100 index finished at a new six-year high today, gaining 28.4 points, or 0.5%, to 6,346 points, as investors chased potential bid targets higher.
Cable & Wireless was top blue chip riser, up 3.01% to £1.79, as the shares spiked on the back of reports Deutsche Telekom is mulling a possible bid. Supermarket groups were again in demand, with Tesco and Wm Morrison among the leaders as traders await further bid developments at rival J Sainsbury. Tesco rose 1.04% to £4.38, Morrison gained 2.64% to £3.11 and Sainsbury rose 1.28% to £5.16.
