In London, shares fell sharply in early trading and continued to fall and the FTSE 100 sank below the 6,000 level, down 250.4 points, or 4.1%, to 5,858.9.
No shares made gains on the FTSE 100 and serious losses were incurred. Antofagasta shares slid 75 points, or 10.98%, to 608p as investors feared mining stocks would suffer as the credit crisis begins to dominate the global economy. Fellow miner Lonmin fell 290 points, or 9.41%, to £27.92, closely followed by Anglo American Ordinance, down 255 points, or 9.36%, to £24.70. Vedanta Resources shares fell 138p, or 8.44%, to £14.98 and Kazakhmys shares were down 98 points, or 8.38%, to £10.71.
