Cairn Energy gas find drives FTSE

Cairn Energy, which announced it had made a fresh gas discovery in India on Saturday, is helping cement the FTSE's place well over the 6,000 mark in early trading on Monday.

The energy firm has gained 140p, or 4.82%, to climb to £30.46, with the FTSE 100 up 26.1 points, or 0.43%, to 6,117.5. Whitbread is also having a strong morning, advancing 53p, or 4.45%, to £12.43, and is followed by Cadbury Schweppes, Home Retail and Antofagasta. However, early gains are being offset by losses for Shire, down 41.5p, or 4.41%, to 898.5p, Eurasian and British Energy Group. In the US, the Dow Jones had a successful weekend, and will open today up 42.91 points, or 0.33%, to 12,891.86.
