The FTSE fell 0.28%, or 17.5 points, this morning to 6123.2p after building materials distributor Wolsley reported a 15% fall in quarterly pretax profits and said it would cut 3,000 jobs following the US housing market crisis.
BHP Billiton fell 2.77%, or 42 points, to 1476p while Anglo American fell 1.99%, or 56 points, to 2753p after metal and oil prices dropped. Compass Group rose 5.88%, or 17 points, to 306.25p after earnings exceeded expectations. Sage Group rose 5.32%, or 10.3 points, to 204p after reporting a 14% rise in full-year pretax profits. Barclays rose 2.96%, or 15.5 points, to 539.5p as it reassured investors it would not report any more bad news.
