In London, shares climbed and the FTSE 100 was up 13.5 points, or 0.21%, to 6,474.9 by the end of trading.
BHP Billiton made the biggest gains, up 75 points, or 4.41%, to £17.75, followed by Marks & Spencer, which added 21 points, or 3.32%, to 653p following good third quarter profits. Anglo American climbed 100 points, or 3.28%, to £31.52, Rio Tinto shares gained 137 points, or 3.26%, to £43.34, while Tullow Oil shares added 20.5 points, or 3.17%, to 668p. British Airways lost 16 points, or 3.95%, to 389p, Northern Rock shares lost 6.7 points, or 3.92%, to 164.1p, while Intercontinental Hotels lost 25 points, or 2.38%, to £10.25.
